Our History

Diocesan Seal

Our church, St. John the Divine Episcopal Church, was founded in 1955 as a mission congregation of the Diocese of Los Angeles. The first stage improvements of our property here at Bay and Orange were completed with the construction of the Church/Parish Hall in 1957. The ancillary buildings were completed in the 1960s and St. John’s Manor was completed in 1984.

St. John’s was given parish status in 1986. St. John’s continues to minister to its members and our community through worship and service.

The accessories and decorations of the church are identified in the self guided tour framed on the wall of the rear of the church.

Our Name

St. John the Divine is our Patron Saint. This is the name given to the author of the last book of the Bible: The Revelation to John. The author of this book is called a divine because of his discerning vision (divination) and to distinguish him from other saints named John. While the formal name for our church is St. John the Divine Episcopal Church, we frequently refer to it simply as St. John’s.
